A SHORT HISTORY OF THE GUILD
painttool.gif This is the 44th anniversary of The Westbank Art Guild.
On a cold rainy night in February, 1964, eleven people braved the elements for a meeting at Behrman Recreational Center on the West Bank. The Guild came about through the efforts of Mildred Lewis who felt that there was a need for an organization for artists in the community. Working throuth the New Orleans Recreation Department, the guild organized with Joseph Darce as its first instructor, and began weekly to paint and share a knowledge of art. The meeting place was the stage of Behrman Gym.

On September 29, 1965, under Milton E. Landry as president, the first by-laws were adapted and the Guild continued to move forward.

William Collins became president in 1967. In June of that year, a contest was held to select a logo for the Guild, and "Bill" Collins design was adapted by popular vote. The first newsletter was mailed on August 1, 1967.

The original roster of 11 members has evolved into a membership of more than 125 artists. The Guild continues its mission of encouraging the development of art and the artist in the community. It takes great pride in its accomplishments.

The Guild prides itself on being a good citizen of the West Bank of Jefferson Parish and the greater New Orleans, La. area.

For example, a scholarship program, financed by the Guild, provides money for fine art scholarships for West Bank students who compete for them.

The Guild sponsors children and young adult art shows, senior citizen art shows, and a yearly juried open show. Our members participate in every art competition in the state, and in national and international competition as well.

We offer an Associate Membership to those members who wish not to participate in the club activities or offices, but wish to associate themselves with the Guild. To join, or to receive an application to our Guild, send an email to the West Bank Art Guild.

Members who participate in the shows sponsored by the Guild must be in good standing with dues paid in full. The following is a list of upcoming shows and events:
